Release Date
During April 2013, over five days, dance artists Mark Anderson and Dave McKenna; film artist Matthew Beckett and composer Ashley Brown worked with young men at Stoke Heath Prison to choreograph and produce a site-specific dance film.
The resulting film explores what the release date means to prisoners. As their date approaches, inmates reflect on their time in prison. Their cells hold memories of their own personal struggles.
For those participants who were less comfortable (or able) to verbally express themselves, the dance residency gave them a way of doing so in an empowering manner. It allowed participants the freedom to be both vulnerable and assertive, giving them a safe vehicle for self-expression.
